August 23--By Donnie Gosnell

On August 23, the 23rd night of racing action would take place, after last week’s rainout, Mother Nature would hit the track again, but after a brief shower the sun came back out and the show went on.

Ortega Back To His Winning Ways

The Mini Stock feature would see a familiar face back on top once again.  The top two in the point standings, Bobby Ortega and Jon White Jr, would lead the field to green.  Ortega would get the jump and take the lead.  Ortega would lead every lap in the Smith One Racing, Parker Racing #07 for his 9th feature win of the season.  In the points, with Ortega’s win, Jon White Jr. now leads by just one point.  The hard charger was Lyle Miller #151 after moving from 16th to 9th

Davis Jr. Back In Victory Lane

In the Limited Modified feature we would see David Newton #54 and Ronny Sigman #1 on the front row.  This race would see the Top 3 in points run 1, 2, & 3 almost all race long.  Tommy Davis Jr. would take the lead over on Lap 3 from Newton and never look back.  Davis Jr. and Sigman would run nose to tail for most of the 20 lap race. In the end, Tommy Davis Jr. would be able to hold off Sigman to score his 10th win of the season in the Tommy’s Towing, Parts Plus, Smileys #17.  Davis was also able to win back to back features for the 4th time this season.  In the points, Davis Jr. holds a 16 point lead over younger brother, Chris Davis.  The hard charger was Billy Crocker Jr. #911 after moving from 20th to 9th.

Mooney Continues To Add Up Wins

For the 16th time in the 2008 season the Jr. Minis would see the same winner pull into victory lane.  Dustin Mooney would hold off a strong challenge from Courtney Miller #93, to score his track high 16th feature win of the season in the Mooney’s Racing Engines #5.  In the points, Mooney now leads Miller by 62 points.

First Time Winner Scores Bonus Money

The always exciting Street Stock Feature would see Danny Pattat #118 and Gary Blackwell #30 on the front row.  Pattat would get out front first with the always exciting,  Tommy Davis Jr. #17 on his back bumper.  Pattat would have his car on the bottom the whole race and with the track one lane would make it very hard for Davis Jr. to get by.  Pattat would have to get through some late race cautions, but he never would slip.  Pattat would lead all 20 laps to score his first win of the season in the Up-Rite Foundation #118.  Pattat picked a good night to win because there was a $100 bonus to win in the street stocks.  In the points, last year’s champion, Chris Davis #98 leads Steve Byram #2 by 12 points.   The Hard Charger was David Bryant Jr. #07 after moving from 17th to 9th.

Pace Makes It Back To Back To Back Wins

The Bomber feature would be led to green by Aaron Davis #87 and Glen Pace #4.  From the drop of the green, Davis and Pace would battle for the lead.  Davis would be the first to get the lead.  Davis would lead until Lap 4 when Pace would get under him.  Davis didn’t give up as he and Pace ran bumper to bumper.  The leaders got into lap traffic late in the race and Pace would get away from Davis.  Pace would go on to score his 8th win of the season and 3rd in a row.  In the points, Pace leads Chad Roden #3:17 by 15 points.  The Hard Charger was Chad Roden #3:17 after moving from 10th to 3rd.

Troutman Returns to Thunderbird Winner Circle for the First Time Since 2004

The Southern Modified feature would see another good battle for the win.   Jason Troutman #10 and Craig Petty #5 would start on pole, but we would see Troutman and Ronny Sigman #1 battle for the lead.  Troutman and Sigman would run nose to tail with Sigman looking for an opening to get by Troutman.  Sigman would see his chance on Lap 6, when he would look under Troutman for the lead but they would make contact ending Sigman’s night.  Troutman would go on to score his first win at Thunderbird Speedway since August of 2004 in the Town East Ford #10.  In the Points, Sigman leads Michael Price #22 by 30 points.

July 26, 2008--By Donnie Gosnell

On July 26, the 20th night of racing action would take place, with the track going dry very early in the night, due to the warm temperatures.  It would still make for some very exciting racing action throughout the night, as it always does.

Two Wins In A Row, Extends White’s Point Lead

The Mini Stock feature would see outside pole sitter, Bobby Ortega #07 takes the early lead.  Ortega would lead until Lap 4 until for the second straight week, mechanical failure ends his night.  With Ortega’s problems, Chris Miller #2 takes over the lead.  Miller leads until Lap 8, when last week’s winner, Jon White Jr. #8 takes the lead.  White would hold off James Watson #24 the final two laps to score his third win of the year.  The Hard Charger was Lyle Miller #151 who moved from 14th to 4th.

Davis Jr. Sweeps Street Stocks

In the Street Stock feature, Tommy Davis Jr. #17 would get the jump on pole sitter, Clint Frideley #08 to take the early lead.  Davis Jr. and Frideley would run first and second for the first 10 laps.  Steve Byram #2 would pass Frideley on Lap 11 to take over the second spot.  After a Lap 13 caution for Bubba Davis #19, the race would resume with Davis Jr. leading Byram and Frideley.  Davis Jr. would lead the final five laps to score his third win of the season in the Tommy’s Towing, Davis Race Cars, Wills Point Auto Supply #17.  The Hard Charger was Chris Davis #98 who moved from 10th to 4th

Glass Breaks Into Victory Lane For Third Time

In the Bomber feature, Chad Roden #317 and Glen Pace #4 would lead the field to green, but third place starter Sonny Glass #42 would take the lead to lead Lap 1.  Glass would have to battle Pace and Roden the entire feature.  The three drivers, who run first through third in points, always seem to finish nose-to-tail in the features as well.  Glass holds off Pace and Roden to score his third feature win of the season.  The Hard Charger was James Riddle #14 who moved from 20th to 4th

 July 19, 2008--By Donnie Gosnell

July 19th would mark the 19th night of racing for the 2008 season.  The track would surprise a lot of drivers as it would stay tacky through the features, despite the 100 degree temperatures.  With that, we would see a lot of fantastic racing action.

Win Puts White In Points Lead

The Mini Stock feature would see Jon White Jr. (#8) jump out to the early lead.  Point leader, Bobby Ortega (#07) would take the lead on Lap 3 and would begin to pull away until a Lap 8 caution would bunch up the field.  On the restart, Ortega would break while coming to the green, ending his bid for a win.  With Ortega out of the race, White Jr. would never look back as he scored his second win of the 2008 season.  The Hard Charger was Randy Garvin (#3) who moved from 12th to 3rd

Younger Davis Scores Second Win Of Season

The Limited Modified battle would brothers, Chris Davis (#98) and Tommy Davis Jr., who also are the Top 2 in points, battle the entire race for the win.  Chris Davis would take the lead on Lap 1 and would lead every lap in the 20 lap feature, but would see a challenge the whole race from the black and white #8 car of Tommy Davis Jr.  By halfway, the two would hold a half a lap lead over third place.  A caution flag with five laps to go would bunch the field up.  C. Davis would get a good jump on the restart and in the closing laps would open up a three car length lead over Davis Jr.  Chris Davis scores his second win of the season in the Parts Plus, Tommy’s Towing, Demar Farms #98.  The Hard Charger was Danny Massingill #95 who moved from 18th to 7th

Mooney Wins Again

In the Junior Mini Stocks, Dustin Mooney #5 would get the jump on pole sitter, Dakota Raines #88 to take the early lead.  Mooney would lead the race wire-to-wire to score the win, but he would see a late race charge from the #13 of Kylar Smith.  Smith would try the final four laps to get around Mooney on the inside.  He would get up to Mooney’s door at the checkered flag to make for an exciting finish to the race.

Three’s Company For Davis Brothers

In the always highly contested Street Stock division, for the third straight week, this race would be exciting and have the fans on their feet.  Pole sitter, Bubba Davis #19 would jump to the lead on Lap 1.  This race would show a little sibling rivalry as B. Davis would have to hold off his younger brothers, Chris Davis #98 and Tommy Davis Jr. #17 to try and score the win.  The three brothers would battle non-stop for all 20 laps and never pull any punches, as they would bump and grind to see which Davis would come out on top.  Point leader, Steve Byram #2 would suffer a flat tire at halfway, while running fourth.  The final half of the street stock race would see the three run all over the track, trying their best to get around one another.  B. Davis was able to hold off his two siblings to score his third feature win of the season in the Parts Plus, Tommy’s Towing #19.  The Hard Charger was Steve Brown #76 who moved from 12th to 5th

Another Win For Pace

The Bomber feature would see pole sitter, Sonny Glass #42 jump out to an early lead.  Glass would battle with point leader, Glen Pace #4 and second place in point standings, Chad Roden #317 for the race lead.  Glass, who sits third in the point standings would try all he could to try and gain important points on the front two.  At Lap 12, Pace gets around Glass for the lead.  Pace would lead the final four laps of the race to score his fifth win of the season.  The Hard Charger was Johnny Rivers #74 who moved from 15th to 5th

Sartain Scores First Win Of Season

The Southern Modified race would be a wild one at the start.  After multiple attempts at a start, we finally see pole sitter, Jack Sartain #47 get the lead to lead the opening lap.  Sartain would have to hold off point leader, Ronny Sigman #1, all 20 laps to score the wire-to-wire victory in the Sartain Brothers Racing, H&M Tool & Die #47.  The Hard Charger was Chaz Exum #21 who moved from 17th to 4th

July12, 2008--By Donnie Gosnell

On July 12, the 18th night of racing action for the 2008 season would take place.  Once again, the racers would not let the fans down as they put on one of the best, if not the best show of the season.  Track conditions were tacky in the first half of the heat races but would start to go dry in the later stages of the heat races. By feature time, the track was very dry but very racy with two grooves which made for some great features.

Watson Wins Second In A Row Via DQ

The 12-lap Mini Stock feature would see John White (#6) and Bobby Ortega (#07) lead the 15 cars to the green. Bobby Ortega would grab the lead but White and Ortega would make contact in Turn one and bring the caution out.  On the complete restart, Corey Morris #93 would take over the lead. Morris would lead the race wire to wire, but in post race tech Morris refused to tech so he would be disqualified, resulting in James Watson scoring his 2nd win in a row in the Tommy’s Towing, Parts Plus #24.  The Hard Charger was Will Garrison #2 who moved from 13th to 4th.

Smith Edges Davis In Fantastic Modified Duel

In the Southern Modifieds, Cody Smith #18 and Tommy Davis Jr. #17 would lead the field of 22 to the green.  This race was one of the best Modified features in recent memory.  Smith would get the lead on Lap 1, but would never get too far away from Davis.  Throughout this race, the leaders would swap the lead back and forth and back and forth and never be more then a car length apart. Smith and Davis would put on an epic battle.  At one point in the 20 lap race, Smith and Davis would race side by side and door to door for 10 straight laps and never touch.  With five laps to go, the race became even more contested as Ronny Sigman #1 would catch the front two and start to battle for the win.  Smith would work the bottom of the track for all 20 laps making Davis and Sigman work the outside to make the pass for the win.  With two laps to go, the front three are just one car length apart with Smith and Sigman on the bottom and Davis on top.  With one lap to go, Davis makes one last charge at Smith, Davis gets to Smith’s door but slips.  Coming out of Turn 4 and taking his first win of the season was Cody Smith #18.  After battling for 20 straight laps, the two drivers would get out of the cars and shake each others hands.  The race was so good that the flag man would come shake both drivers’ hands on a great race.   The Hard Charger was Bud Reed who moved from 20th to 12th.

Mooney Finds Victory Lane Once Again

The Junior Mini Stock feature would see point leader, Dustin Mooney #5 and Gavin Smith #36 leading the field to green.  Mooney would get the jump to lead the first lap.  By two laps to go, Mooney had opened up his lead to almost a straightaway, but a late caution would bunch up the field.  After the restart, Mooney would have to hold off a late race charge from Dakota Raines #88.  Raines would get within a car length of Mooney but that’s as far as he could get.  Dustin Mooney scores his 12th win of the season in the SNL Automotive, Mooney’s Racing Engines #5.  The Hard Charger goes to Dakota Raines #88 after moving from 8th to 2nd.

Door To Door Action Ends With First Time Winner

The always entertaining Street Stock division would once again put on a great show and not let the fans down, with another one of the best features in recent memory.  Just like the modified feature, this race would be a barnburner from the drop of the green flag until the checkered flag fell.  Chris Davis #98 and Les Lunsford #11 led the field to green.  Lunsford would get the lead and lead the opening laps.  After a caution on Lap 5, Lunsford’s night ends as he breaks on the restart, handing the lead over to C. Davis and Gary Blackwell #30.  Over the next 13 laps, Blackwell and Davis would put on one of the best Street Stock battles for the lead.  The two drivers would battle side by side and door to door for the next 13 laps with Davis on the bottom and Blackwell on top.  They would swap the lead eight times just at the flag stand and no telling how many times over the 13 laps.  The two drivers battle side by side.  With two laps to go the caution comes out, ending the battle.  On the restart Davis has to battle Clint Frideley #08 for the 2nd spot, letting Blackwell get away by 2 car lengths.  Blackwell goes on to score his first career Street Stock feature win in the Wisel Racing #30.  The Hard Charger was Danny Pattat #118 after moving from 18th to 6th.

Davis Tops Bombers For Second Straight Week

In the Bombers, last week’s winner, Aaron Davis #87 and Alex Anders #70 led the field to green.  Davis would get the jump to take the lead.  Davis would never look back and never see a challenge.  Davis would pull away by a straightaway over the 15 lap race which saw no cautions.  Davis scores his 2nd win in a row in the Tommy’s Towing, Parts Plus, Signs By Davis Racing #87.  The Hard Charger was Steven Baker #2 after moving from 22nd to 11th

Martin Scores First Win Of Season

In the Limited Modified division, Gary Blackwell #010 and Tommy McManus #103 would lead the field to green.  McManus would get the lead on Lap one and would lead the first four laps when Tommy Davis Jr., #17 would take over the lead on Lap 5.  Davis Jr. would pull away from the rest of the field until Lap 16 when Davis Jr., breaks a rear gear in Turn 1, ending his night.  Michael Martin #31 would take over the lead, and Martin would lead the final four laps of the race to score his first win of the season in the J.M. Martin Construction #31.  The Hard Charger was Chris Davis #98 after moving from 20th to 12th.

July 5, 2008--By Donnie Gosnell

On July 5, the 17th night of racing action for the 2008 season would take place.  Once again, the racers would not let the fans down as they put on another great show with plenty of great racing.  Track conditions were tacky in the heat races but would kind of throw the drivers for a loop in the features, as they wondered if it would stay tacky or go dry.

Watson Returns To Victory Lane

The 12-lap Mini Stock feature would see Jon White Jr. (#8) grab the early lead from his outside front row starting position.  White would lose the lead at halfway to point leader, Bobby Ortega (#07).  Ortega’s run for another win would end with a Lap 8 crash, which would give the lead to James Watson (#24).  Watson would lead the final four laps to score his second win of the season in the Tommy’s Towing, Parts Plus, Signs by Davis Racing #24.  Watson would also score the Hard Charger after moving from sixth place to first.

Rocket Blasts Off To Second Win

In the Limited Modifieds, David Emmons (#178), driving Randy Eckert’s #44 ride, would lead the field to green and lead the first three laps of the race.  He would have a hard time holding off Ronny Sigman (#1) and Chris Davis (#98) for the early lead.  After a Lap 3 caution, Sigman would find the outside groove and take over the lead.  Sigman would lead the final 16 laps to score his second win of the 2008 season in the Town East Ford, Z&Z Motorsports #1.  The Hard Charger was Tommy McManus #103, who moved from 12th to finish 4th

It’s Miller Time In The Junior Mini Stocks

The Junior Mini Stock feature would have Gavin Smith #36 take the early lead from his outside front row starting position.  Smith would lead the first two laps.  He would lose the lead on Lap 3 to pole-sitter, Courtney Miller (#93).  Miller would lead the final 6 laps and hold off point leader, Dustin Mooney (#5) to score her second feature win of the season.

Duel Between Brothers Ends In Fantastic Finish

The always exciting Street Stock division would once again not let the fans down, as they would put on one of the best features in recent memory.  It would end in a nail-biting finish.  Chris Davis (#98) would take the lead from his pole position.  Throughout the 20-lap feature, the Top 5 cars would be in a close pack as they jockeyed for position.  Behind Davis, the other drivers would battle door-to-door and bumper-to-bumper for position with a lot of great moves.  Davis leads up until the white flag when he has to hold off his brother, Bubba Davis (#19) and Steve Byram (#2), which is no easy task as the brakes on his car have begun to fail.  Going into the last turn, the first and second place cars make contact, allowing Bubba Davis to make a run at his younger brother on the inside.  The two drag race to the checkered flag, and in one of the closest street stock finishes, the elder Davis takes his second win of the season in the Tommy’s Towing, 24-Hour Recovery Solutions, Parts Plus #19.  Danny Pattat #118 moved from 19th to 8th for the Hard Charger award.

Davis Scores First Win Of Season

In the Bombers, another class that never ceases to provide excitement, would see pole-sitter, Aaron Davis (#87) take the early lead.  Davis would lead wire to wire to score his first win of the season in the Tommy’s Towing #87.  Point leader, Glen Pace #4 would recover from an early spin to come back to challenge Davis and Chad Roden #317 for the win, after a caution would fly on the white flag, bunching them all back up.  The green and white restart would see Davis get away from Roden and Pace for the win.  Ryan Barnhart #65 moved from 20th to 10th for the Hard Charger award in his first night out for the 2008 season.

Sigman Ends Night In Victory Lane...Again

In the Southern Modified division, we would see front row starters Phillip Smith #13 and Matt Deaver #28 dominate the first half of the feature with Smith leading Lap 1 and Deaver leading the next thirteen.  Deaver would lose the lead to Ronny Sigman #1 on Lap 15.  Deaver would try to stay in contact with Sigman, but he would fall short as Sigman takes his fifth win of the season in his Town East Ford, Z&Z Motorsports #1.  The Hard Charger was Charlie Smith #516, who moved from 11th to 5th

June 28, 2008—By Donnie Gosnell

The 16th night of racing would be another door-to-door action-packed filled night.  We would see two drivers make it back-to-back weeks with feature wins.  The track conditions would be the same as it has been the past couple of weeks, with the heat races being tacky and the features being dry.

Abracadabra:  Mooney’s Magic Works Again

Dustin Mooney was able to put his #5 Ford Pinto back in Victory Lane for the eleventh time this season and fourth in a row.  Mooney started from pole and led wire-to-wire, but had to hold off a late charge from Dakota Raines in the #24 car.

Different Winners Continue In Street Stocks

For the sixth week in a row, we would see a different winner, as Junior Zbleski was able to put his #01 machine back in Victory Lane for the second time this season.  Zbleski, who had not won since April 19, passed race leader, Les Lunsford #11 with two laps to go.  He held off Lunsford and Chris Davis #98 for his second career feature win.  The Hard Charger was Bubba Davis, who moved from 18th to 5th

Five New Winners Go To Victory lane

By: Donnie Gosnell

On April 12, 115 cars showed up for racing action at Thunderbird Speedway.  We would see the first dry slick track of the 2008 season.  With it slick, the veteran drivers would be the drivers to beat.  We would try something different on the night with how the cars lined up for the feature.  How they finished in the heat is how they started in the feature. So, if you won Heat Race #1, you were on the pole!
